Snæfellsjökull Summit – SOLSTICE DEPARTURE

A night climb of Snæfellsjökull on the shortest night of the year. One departure only, for a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 guests. If fewer than 4 have booked by 13 June, we cancel and refund in full.

Meet us at the base parking area at 20:00. The approach to the glacier edge takes around 40 to 60 minutes on rock and lava. At the glacier we stop and gear up. Your guide will walk you through everything before you take a single step on the ice. From here the ascent is a gradual, low-angle climb on ice and snow. Strenuous, but not technical..

The true summit, at 1,446 metres, involves a steep final pitch on rock and ice. Most groups stop at 1,418 metres. We aim to be on top around midnight, in the low midsummer light. Then down, back at the parking area in the early morning.

What you need to know

This is a proper mountain night. It suits those with some hiking experience and a decent level of fitness. You do not need mountaineering experience.

All glacier equipment is provided: crampons, ice axe, harness and carabiner. Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Trail running shoes will not do. It is cold on the glacier at midnight, even in June. Dress in layers: a wool base layer, a warm mid layer and a waterproof outer layer.
