Snæfellsjökull Summit

Meet us at the base parking area at the foot of Snæfellsjökull. From there the approach to the glacier edge takes around 40 to 60 minutes on rock and lava, with the mountain growing ahead of you the whole way.
At the glacier, we stop and gear up. Your guide will walk you through everything before you take a single step on the ice. From here the ascent is a gradual, low-angle climb on ice and snow. Strenuous, but not technical.
The true summit, at 1,446 metres, involves a steep final pitch on rock and ice. Most groups stop at 1,418 metres. Still a full summit experience, with the same views and the same satisfaction. We take our lunch at the top, weather permitting. Then down. Total round trip is 6 to 8 hours.

What you need to know

This is a proper mountain day. The hike suits those with some hiking experience and a decent level of fitness, comfortable with steep ascents in variable conditions. You do not need mountaineering experience.
All glacier equipment is provided: crampons, ice axe, harness and carabiner. Wear sturdy waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Trail running shoes will not do. Dress in layers. Think base layer made of wool, mid layer to keep you warm and a waterproof outer layer. Weather is the variable nobody controls.
On a clear day the views extend almost the full length of Iceland, Reykjanes to one horizon, the Westfjords to the other. On a cloudy day you stand in the white and feel the mountain differently. Both are worth it.
